Business credit is separate from personal credit. A strong business credit profile unlocks higher limits, better terms, and protects your personal assets. Here's how to build it from scratch using your tax refund.

Step 2

Step 3

Step 1: Establish Business Identity
Before you can build business credit, you need a business that credit bureaus can track:
- Form an LLC: Compare formation services
- Get an EIN: Free at IRS.gov
- Open a business bank account: Compare business banks
- Get a business phone number: Google Voice or dedicated line
- Register with Dun & Bradstreet: Request a free D-U-N-S number at D&B
Step 2: Open Net-30 Vendor Accounts
Net-30 vendors let you buy supplies now and pay in 30 days. They report payment history to business credit bureaus.
Starter vendors (no personal guarantee required):
- Uline: Shipping and packaging supplies
- Quill: Office supplies
- Summa Office Supplies: Low minimum orders, reports to D&B and Experian
- Crown Office Supplies: Reports to all three bureaus
Strategy: Buy $50–$100 of supplies you actually need. Pay the invoice 5–10 days early. Repeat monthly.
Step 3: Get a Business Credit Card
Business cards report to business credit bureaus (some also report to personal). Use the card for all business expenses. Pay in full monthly.
Best starter cards:
- Chase Ink Business Cash: $750 bonus, 5% back on office supplies and internet
- Amex Blue Business Plus: 2x points on all purchases, no annual fee
- Capital One Spark Cash: 2% back on everything, good for businesses with revenue

Step 4: Add a Business Loan or Line of Credit
After 6–12 months of vendor and credit card history, apply for a small business loan or line of credit. Options:
- SBA microloans: Up to $50,000, favorable terms
- Online lenders: Kabbage, OnDeck, Fundbox (higher rates, faster approval)
- Credit unions: Often the best rates for established local businesses
Business Credit Score Ranges
| Bureau | Score Range | Good Score | Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dun & Bradstreet PAYDEX | 1–100 | 80+ | 100 |
| Experian Intelliscore | 1–100 | 76+ | 90+ |
| Equifax Business | 101–992 | 700+ | 800+ |
Using Your Refund Strategically
- $500: LLC formation + D&B registration + first net-30 order
- $1,000: Above + secured business credit card deposit
- $2,500: Above + 6 months of net-30 purchases + business bank account buffer
Compare Business Credit Cards
Build business credit while earning rewards on everyday expenses.
Compare Cards →Most business credit cards and loans require a personal guarantee, meaning you're personally liable if the business defaults. This is standard for new businesses. Read the fine print before applying.
